“Treecam” Set Up in League City

LEAGUE CITY, Texas (AP) _ The relocation of a more than 100-year-old oak tree in Southeast Texas has drawn an online audience.

League City officials have set up a webcam featuring the towering Ghirardi oak. Final preparations continue for the crane-assisted relocation that begins Tuesday.

The tree will be moved about 1,500 feet to a planned water conservation education park. The tree gets the Ghirardi name from one of League City’s original Italian farming families. Clarence Ghirardi donated land for the new site.

The Compton oak was set to be cut down for widening Louisiana Ave. in League City, about 20 miles southeast of Houston.

Supporters said the tree contributes to the community’s charm and should be saved.

The City Council voted in March to spend nearly $200,000 to relocate the tree.
