AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says the Housing Authority of Travis County could not account for millions in federal funding.
Auditors said the Travis County agency “haphazardly” transferred more than $2.5 million between its federal and non-federal programs, had more than $600,000 in undocumented costs and improperly used more than $3,000 for travel expenses.
The auditors also said in an Aug. 17 report that the agency’s books and records were not auditable.
The agency’s temporary executive director, Craig Alter, told the Austin American-Statesman Wednesday “there were some mistakes made.”
The agency fully intends to cooperate with HUD to address 13 recommendations, including hiring an outside, independent firm to review spending.
