Train Derailment Forces Evacuations in Fayette County

SCHULENBURG, Texas (AP) _ Authorities have evacuated more than 80 homes while crews worked to remove two rail cars containing chlorine after a train derailment in Fayette County.

Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka said a bridge collapse over Foster’s Creek and the West Navidad River led to the derailment of 22 train cars Monday night. The Victoria Advocate reported that some of the cars spilled a chemical identified as paint solvent.

The homes were evacuated Tuesday as a precaution. Schulenburg Fire Chief Dennis Lededa said the cars containing the chlorine were entangled in the wreckage of the collapsed trestle. The cars were expected to removed by Wednesday morning.

No one was injured in Monday’s derailment of the Union Pacific train about two miles west of the city.
