HEMPSTEAD, Texas (AP) _ Two experts say it is likely Sandra Bland had access to marijuana in jail before her death, three days after she was pulled over for a traffic stop.
Authorities on Monday released an initial toxicology report for Bland after her July 13 death in the Waller County Jail.
The report says Bland’s bloodstream had 18 micrograms per liter of THC, one of the active components of marijuana. Robert Johnson, chief toxicologist for the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office, and University of Florida toxicology professor Bruce Goldberger both say that’s high enough to suggest she used marijuana in jail.
Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis declined to comment on the report. One of his prosecutors, Warren Diepraam, said last week that he wouldn’t rule out drugs being smuggled into the jail.
