Top Ranked Bombers Sweep Second Place Victoria

Overcoming an early deficit, the Brazos Valley Bombers (36-12) completed a sweep of the second place Victoria Generals (33-19) with a 3-2 victory Wednesday.

“To get a sweep here at home this late in the year getting ready for the playoffs—it’s just good for momentum,” said head coach Curt Dixon. “Winning good ballgames like this, it’s just good to get a series sweep and not a split.”

Victoria would go on top 1-0 in the top of the first, but Bombers starting pitcher Zach Girrens would respond to post seven strikeouts in his six-inning outing, earning his fifth win of the season and improving his record to 5-2.

The Bombers would claim the lead in the bottom of the second inning by scoring three runs, two of which came on a double by right fielder Blake Kopetsky.

“It was a lefty-on-lefty matchup, so I knew it was going to be a little harder competition. I saw the ball real well and did my job,” Kopetsky said after ending the night 3-for-3.

The Generals would add a run in the top of the fifth, but it would prove too little too late as the Bombers would go on to earn their second win of their four game home stand.

As the 2014 Texas Collegiate League Playoffs approach, the Bombers enter the final stretch of the season confident that home field advantage will help them to become the first team to repeat as TCL Champions.

“We’ve got our rotation set, we’ve got the guys in that we want to go battle in the playoffs with,” Dixon said. “Everybody will be here till the end, and we’ve set ourselves in a situation where we get to play here at home for the first game. That’s all we can do is get in, have a chance, and set ourselves up to play at home.”

The Bombers will begin the last half of their home stand Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Cellucor Field against the East Texas PumpJacks.
