Three Ags on Lombardi watchlist

Tony Jerod-Eddie

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M football team was well-represented Wednesday as the Lombardi Award Committee released the 2011 Lombardi Award “watch list” which featured Aggies Tony Jerod-Eddie, Luke Joeckel and Garrick Williams.

The Lombardi Award is awarded to the nation’s top performer among linebackers and both offensive and defensive linemen.

As a junior in 2010, Jerod-Eddie started every game at defensive end and finished with 49 tackles, including 22 solo stops along with 2.5 tackles for loss and two pass break-ups. The DeSoto, Texas, native helped lead a much-improved Aggie defense as Texas A&M tied for the Big 12 South title during a 9-4 campaign. Jerod-Eddie received honorable mention All-Big 12 honors from both the league’s coaches and The Associated Press.

Joeckel, meanwhile, burst onto the college football scene a year ago as a true freshman by starting all 13 games for the Aggies at left tackle. With Joeckel as a cornerstone, the Aggie offensive front helped pave the way for 5,744 yards of total offense and 3,599 passing yards, which were both No. 2 totals in school history. The Arlington, Texas, native was selected to the Big 12 All-Freshman team in addition to being named an honorable mention All-Big 12 performer and garnering Freshman All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America.

Williams developed into one of the Aggies’ most consistent defenders in 2010 and finished second on the team with 112 tackles, including five for loss and one fumble recovery. Starting at inside linebacker, Williams earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors as the Aggies jumped in the national rankings from No. 105 in total defense in 2009 to No. 55 last season.

Texas A&M football will kick off its 2011 season on Sept. 4 when the Aggies host SMU in a 6:30 p.m. contest at Kyle Field.
