Texas A&M Women’s Golf in 18th Headed into Final Round

TULSA, Oklahoma – The Texas A&M women’s golf team shot it’s best round of the week, but fell a couple spots to 18th on the leader board after Thursday’s third round at the NCAA Championships being played at the Tulsa Country Club. Better wind conditions led to lower scores from most of the field on the par 70, 6,194 yard championship course Thursday.

“We definitely improved today, it was out there for us to go get a good score,” Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. “A couple of our seniors did a good job of not letting the round get away from them. They could have just let their score get up there today, but they did a good job of holding it together and posting good scores.”

No. 3 Duke claimed the day-three lead by six strokes over the nation’s number one team, Southern Cal. Oklahoma fell to third after sitting atop the standings after the first two rounds in its home state. Following the Sooners on the leader board are No. 2 UCLA, No. 27 Mississippi State, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 11 Arizona, No. 17 NC State, No. 31 Tulane, No. 22 Ohio State and No. 15 Northwestern in the top-10. Completing the field are No. 10 Alabama, No. 8 Vanderbilt, No. 12 Stanford, No. 6 Washington, No. 4 South Carolina, No. 30 Texas A&M, No. 18 Virginia, No. 21 Florida, No. 25 California, No. 20 Michigan State, No. 24 Iowa State, No. 45 Campbell and No. 29 Kansas.

“Once again it was a team effort, with MJ shooting two-under on the round after going three-under on the back nine,” McCombs said. “As a team we did a great job of getting pars coming into the clubhouse. We have gotten better every day on this course so that gives us a lot to look forward to in tomorrow’s round.”

Freshman Marijosse Navarro finished at two-under on the day to lead the Aggies and claim a tie for 14th at four-over for the tournament, individually. MJ, the eloquently nicknamed ‘Queen of Putts’, tallied four birdies including three on the back nine against just two bogeys in the Aggies best round of the week. Senior Katerina Ruzickova continues to get better in each round in the Sooner State, shooting one-over par and claim a tie for 41st at 10-over. Freshman Andrea Jonama shot four-over Thursday to move to 16-over through 72 holes, the Spaniard will begin Friday’s final round tied for 84th.

“Tonight when I talk to the team I will tell them to go out and enjoy the experience of playing in the National Championships,” McCombs said. “For our three seniors they know going into the round that this is their last chance to put on the A&M uniform, so they need to just take it all in and enjoy every shot.”

Seniors Natalie Reeves and Chelsea Mocio were both five over par on the day. Reeves is tied for 90th at 17-over par. Mocio moved to 22-over in a tie for 113th going into the final 18 holes of her collegiate career.

The fourth and final round of the 2014 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship will tee off 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled due to potential bad weather in the afternoon, the first set of teams will take to the course at 7:00 a.m. Texas A&M will play beside golfers from South Carolina and Virginia beginning at 7:55 a.m. from hole 10.
