NEW ORLEANS – Texas A&M men’s track and field team has been named the Scholar Team of the Year for the 2016-17 Division I indoor and outdoor seasons as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The Aggies swept the indoor and outdoor honors after standing out in the classroom and in competition. In order to be in contention for Scholar Team of the Year, a program must finish highly at the respective national championship meet and have at least a 3.00 cumulative team GPA.
Texas A&M men, who produced a GPA of 3.02, had an incredible year with a NCAA Indoor team title and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Georgia women, who finished second at both national championship meets, swept the women’s honor.
This marks the sixth consecutive year for a SEC school to garner the Men’s Scholar Team of the Year honor. Texas A&M is also the third consecutive SEC men’s program to sweep the indoor and outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year.
The Aggie women’s team was recognized as an All-Academic Team, sporting a GPA of 3.13. A total of 360 NCAA Division I teams were honored for their academics by the USTFCCCA, with 218 women’s teams and 142 men’s programs receiving the recognition.
