Texas House Considering Fee Increases for Highways

Generating more money for Texas highways could mean paying more to register and inspect your car.

Adding $15 dollars to the yearly inspection fee is one of two proposals co-authored by state representative John Raney of Bryan. Raney says that would help fund the Department of Public Safety and its motor vehicle division instead of taking money from the highway fund.

Another bill would add $30 to vehicle registration fees a year. Rane says that would help compensate for a reduction in fuel tax revenue because of more fuel efficient cars on the roads. Raney says a third of the fee increase would go towards paying off existing highway debt. The remainder would go towards new projects.
