Texas A&M Hosts Georgia for USTA College Match Day

COLLEGE STATION – The George P. Mitchell Tennis Center will play host to a top-15 match-up between No. 12 Texas A&M and No. 7 Georgia for the US Tennis Association College Match Day. The match is set to stream on ESPN3 beginning at 6 pm.

The Aggies (16-5, 5-1) put a five match win streak on the line against the Bulldogs (12-5, 7-0), who have won nine straight. Texas A&M returns to action after sweeping Rice Tuesday evening at the Mitchell Tennis Center. Georgia defeated Vanderbilt last Sunday in Athens to remain perfect in SEC play.

The maroon and white are paced by 26th-ranked Shane Vinsant‘s 24 wins, including six in a row. No 13 Harrison Adams (22) and No. 52 Jeremy Efferding (20) have also eclipsed the 20-win plateau in 2013-14. In doubles, the 44th-ranked team of Efferding and Jordan Szabo leads the way with 20 wins, while No. 55 Vinsant and Adams have 19. The team of Junior Ore and Jackson Withrow – with an overall record of 17-6 – is ranked No. 2 in the nation this week and has spent time at No. 1 this season.

In singles, Austin Smith continues to lead the way for the Bulldogs – coming in at No. 18 and on a nine-match winning streak with a team-high 29 wins. He is followed by Nathan Pasha at No. 39, Ben Wagland at No. 72, Garrett Brasseaux at No. 75, and Nick Wood at No. 117. Wood returned to the rankings this week after winning seven straight and starting SEC play unbeaten at 5-0. In doubles, Georgia’s team of Wagland and Hernus Pieters shot up from No. 21 to No. 9.

Georgia leads the all-time series 4-0, with two of those victories coming last season. The Bulldogs bested the Aggies 4-1 in Athens before escaping with a 4-3 victory at the SEC Championships. The two teams faced off in 2002 NCAA Tournament at the Mitchell Tennis Center, the facility attendance record of 2,339 was set at the match.

ABOUT COLLEGE MATCH DAY

First developed in 2013, College Match Day is a weekly series that highlights marquee team matches and features the best programs, players and coaches from around the country. College Match Day is putting a spotlight on men’s and women’s college tennis across the United States. Fans are encouraged to arrive to the match early to participate in College Match Day fan experience trailer on site where fans can engage in a number of activities before and during the match.

Tomorrow’s top-15 showdown will follow a unique, experimental format, as proposed by an advisory group of NCAA Division I athletic directors, in which all six singles matches will be played first, with a best-of-three tiebreak sets format.

Each singles match will be worth one point toward the team total, with four points required to win the team match. Once one team reaches four points and clinches the match, the remaining matches will not be completed. In the case of a 3-3 tie after the singles matches, three doubles matches – played using 10-point super tiebreaks – will be used to determine the winner in what amounts to college tennis’ version of “overtime.” The team that wins two of the three doubles matches wins the team match.
