Texas Democrats Open State Convention

HOUSTON (AP) _ Texas Democrats have opened their convention, with leaders promising to continue building on local successes to make the party more competitive in the Republican-dominated state.

Party Chairman Boyd Ritchie declared the convention open Thursday after a state executive committee meeting. Boyd touted the party’s success in city and county elections in the Dallas and Houston areas, but acknowledged the party needed to do more.

Republicans hold every statewide office and majorities in both chambers of the Legislature. But a growing Hispanic population and new political districts give Democrats a chance to chip at the Republican 12-48 supermajority in the Texas House.

During the next three days Democrats will elect a new party chair and strategize on how to win more elections. Republicans are also meeting this weekend in Fort Worth.
