Texas A&M Announces 2014 Volleyball Schedule

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A 15-match home slate highlights the challenging 29-match 2014 Texas A&M volleyball schedule, as announced by Aggie head coach Laurie Corbelli.

Seventeen matches will be against teams that competed in the 2013 NCAA Championship tournament, and nine contests will be against opponents that were ranked in the top 20 in last year’s final AVCA Top 25 Poll.

The Aggies open the season by hosting the Texas A&M Invitational, August 29-30 at Reed Arena. The Maroon and White makes its season debut Aug. 29 against Tulane, which went 28-4 and was the Conference USA regular season and tournament runner-up last year. Texas A&M closes out the tournament Aug. 30 with matches against Big Ten-foe Iowa and defending Conference USA regular season and tournament champion UTSA, which will be looking to avenge a season-ending loss against the Aggies in the first round of the 2013 NCAA tournament.

A&M then makes its first road trek of the season as the Aggies head to Athens, Ohio, for the four-team Baymont Inn & Suites Invitational, Sept. 5-6. A&M opens against host Ohio, which swept the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament titles last year, appeared in the NCAA tournament for the ninth time in the last 11 years and finished the season 27-6. The Aggies also will face Virginia Tech and 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference runner-up VCU.

A&M continues its road swing Sept. 11-12, heading to Los Angeles to face top-10 teams Southern California and San Diego. USC reached the NCAA regional finals and was No. 6 in the final AVCA Top 25 poll in 2013. San Diego, the defending West Coast Conference champion, was No. 9 in last year’s final poll after advancing to the NCAA regional semifinals.

The Aggies then return to Reed Arena to play host to Florida State in a two-match series, Sept. 19-20. The Seminoles were upset by the Aggies, 3-0, last year at the Texas A&M Invitational but went on to post a 26-8 season record and a No. 11 final ranking after reaching the NCAA regional semifinals.

A&M closes out its 11-match non-conference slate against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 22 at Reed and then opens its 18-match Southeastern Conference schedule Sept. 28 at home against Auburn. The SEC sent a record eight teams to the NCAA tournament last year.

A&M will play nine SEC matches at Reed Arena and concludes its home schedule against defending SEC champion Missouri on Sunday, Nov. 23. The Aggies wrap up the regular season at Ole Miss on Nov. 29.

Corbelli, who is entering her 22nd season as head coach of the Aggies, returns 10 letterwinners ‑‑ including four starters — from last year’s team that went 19-12 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. She also will welcome seven newcomers when the team begins preseason practice on August 9.
