Texas A&M’s Townsend Named SEC Player of the Week

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M women’s tennis freshman Katya Townsend was named the SEC Player of the Week by the league office Wednesday.

“Congratulations to Katya for earning this well-deserved honor,’ Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. “Katya continues to impress all of us with her dedication to improve each and every day. It is great to see her reap the rewards of all of her hard work that she puts into the game.”

Townsend, a Coconut Creek, Florida native, earned the highest ranked win by a freshman in Texas A&M history as she defeated Vanderbilt’s third-ranked Fernanda Contreras in straight sets to help the Aggies defeat the No. 4 Commodores. The right hander opened the match against the Commodores with a 6-4 win over No. 51 Georgia Drummy and Christina Rosca to clinch the doubles point and put the Aggies in position to register the upset.

Townsend followed up Friday’s ranked doubles victory with a 6-3 win over No. 76 Lesedi Jacobs and Tiphani Fiquet of No. 21 Kentucky. In her second ranked singles win of the weekend, Townsend captured a straight set win over No. 48 Justina Mikulskyte to help the Aggies register their second Top-25 win of the weekend.

Sunday’s win was Townsend’s 20th of the year and improved her overall record to 20-5 and 12-3 in dual matches. After last week’s wins, Townsend skyrocketed from the unranked to No. 50 in Tuesday’s ITA Singles rankings.

Georgia’s Lourdes Carle was named SEC Freshman of the Week.

The Aggies hit the road this weekend for a match at Missouri on Friday and at Arkansas on Sunday.
