Texas A&M’s Pickrem Lowers Own Canadian Record, Advances to 200 IM Final at Worlds

BUDAPEST, Hungary. — Texas A&M junior-to-be Sydney Pickrem lowered her own Canadian record in the 200-meter IM as she advanced to the final of the race on Day 1 of the 2017 FINA World Championships on Sunday at Budapest’s Duna Arena.

Pickrem, from Dunedin, Fla., qualified No. 3 for the 200 IM final with a time of 2:09.17, which broke her old national record of 2:09.56 from the Canadian national championships earlier this summer. Pickrem now owns the four fastest 200 IM times by a Canadian.

In other action, 2017 graduate Sarah Gibson, representing the United States, placed 15th in the 100-meter butterfly in 58.48 and senior-to-be Béryl Gastaldello, representing France, finished 21st in 58.97. In the 200 IM, junior-to-be Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo, representing Mexico, placed 27th in 2:16.11 and junior teammate McKenna DeBever was right behind in 28th place with a time of 2:16.52, which lowered her own Peruvian record.

From the men’s team, 2017 senior Turker Ayar, representing Turkey, was 44th in the 50 butterfly in 24.73.

World Swimming Championships broadcast schedule on Olympic Channel
The Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA and NBC Sports will air daily live coverage of the world swimming championships in Budapest, from July 23-30.

The biennial world championships crown medalists in every Olympic swimming event, plus extra events including mixed-gender relays.

The Olympic Channel will air every morning heats session at 3:30 a.m. ET and combine with NBC Sports for every finals session at 11:30 a.m. ET. NBCSports.com/live and the NBC Sports app will live stream every session for subscribers.
