Texas A&M’s New President Now on the Job

The new first family of Texas A&M University has hit the ground running.

Friday was the first day on the job for new President Michael Young. He and his wife Marti spent part of the morning visiting with the media.

Mrs. Young, who was active at the University of Washington as a full time non-compensated volunteer, says her current personal and professional interests “both revolved around this guy right now.”

Both thanked Aggies who have given the warmest welcome they have ever experienced in moving to a new community.

Topics included opposition to the board of regents decision to change the official university seal. Young’s response addressed Aggie traditions, saying “Aggieland and Aggies all over the world are the keepers of the tradition, and they’re going to help educate us and help us understand and make sure we know which ones are really important and vital to the university and we will honor and respect those.”

Young says he’s planning no dramatic changes in his leadership team after the system chancellor directed vice-presidents to submit open-ended resignations.

Young says he has formed no opinion yet about the legislature allowing concealed carrying of weapons in campus buildings and reviving the A&M football series with Texas.

Young spent six hours the day before at the A&M system chancellor’s office, in part looking at supporting faculty research at what is now a top 20 institution for research funding.
