COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M senior Daniel LaCamera was named to the Lou Groza Award Preseason Watch List, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced Wednesday. The award is given annually to the nation’s best kicker.
LaCamera was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award last season, going 18-for-21 on field goals and 51-for-52 on extra points. In Southeastern Conference play, the Tarpon Springs, Fla., native went 12-for-13 including the go-ahead field goal with 58 seconds left at Florida, earning SEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. The senior, who was recently named to the Preseason All-SEC Team, scored 14 points on three field goals and five extra points in the Aggies’ 50-43 comeback victory over Arkansas, including a 27-yard field goal with four seconds left to send the game to overtime.
While the Watch List highlights 30 of the best returning kickers in the country, the Groza Committee watches all FBS kickers during the season, and releases a weekly “Stars of the Week” feature on www.lougrozaaward.com. All FBS kickers remain eligible to be selected as semifinalists.
Accomplishments are tabulated throughout the season and the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award will announce its 20 semifinalists on Thursday, November 1st. From this list, a panel of more than 300 FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists, and current NFL kickers select the top three finalists for the award by Tuesday, November 20th. That same group then selects the national winner, who will be announced on Thursday, December 6th during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
The 27th Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl, recognizes the three finalists during a celebration in Palm Beach County, culminating with a gala awards banquet at West Palm Beach’s Kravis Center for the Performing Arts on December 3rd.
