Texas A&M’s Ines Deheza Named SEC Freshman of the Week

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M women’s tennis player Ines Deheza has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, the Southeastern Conference announced today.

The Santa Cruz, Bolivia, native went a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles last week, including 3-0 at No. 4 singles where she posted straight-set wins in every match to help A&M go 3-0 during the stretch and improve to 6-0 in conference play for the season.

In a non-conference match against Virginia, Deheza came back from a 4-2 second-set deficit to defeated Li Xi, 6-1, 6-4, and give the Aggies a 3-1 lead. A&M went on to defeat the Cavaliers, 5-2, to improve to 6-0 in home matches.

At LSU, Deheza and doubles partner and twin sister Paula Deheza clinched the doubles point for A&M with an 8-3 victory over Kaitlin Burns and Ella Taylor at the No. 3 line. Ines then secured A&M’s match-winning point in singles, defeating LSU’s Ariel Morton, 6-2, 6-2, as the Aggies went on to blank the Tigers, 7-0, in Baton Rouge.

At Arkansas, Ines and Paula led the entire doubles match en route to an 8-5 victory over Ana Hernandez and Kimberley-Ann Surin to help lead A&M to the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. In singles, Ines won the first set against Surin, 6-3, but trailed 5-4 in the second set before winning three consecutive games to close out a 6-3, 7-5 straight-set victory that gave A&M a 5-1 lead.
