Texas A&M’s Gonzalez Named SEC Freshman of the Week

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M’s Domenica Gonzalez has been named the SEC Women’s Tennis Freshman Player of the Week, the Southeastern Conference announced today. The Ecuador native receives the honor for the first time in her career.

Gonzalez extended her team-leading singles win streak to eight matches and remained undefeated in SEC play after helping lead the then-16th-ranked Aggies to a 5-2 win against No. 28 Mississippi State and a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 victory against No. 27 Ole Miss last week at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

Gonzalez posted back-to-back ranked singles victories at the No. 4 line, including a dramatic comeback after losing the first set and being down 2-5, match point in the second set against Ole Miss’ 73rd-ranked Tea Jandric. Gonzalez fought back to force a tiebreaker to decide the second set and went on to win the last match standing, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, to clinch A&M’s 4-3 victory.

Against Mississippi State, Gonzalez recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory over 51st-ranked Anastasia Rentouli, marking the highest ranked win of Gonzalez’s career other than a three-set victory over teammate and then-50th-ranked Rutuja Bhosale in the ITA Texas Regional Championship round of 16 last fall.

Gonzalez, 3-0 in SEC matches only, leads Texas A&M in singles wins with a 15-6 overall record, as well as a 9-2 ledger in dual matches only.

Next up for Gonzalez and Texas A&M (11-4, 3-1 SEC), which moved up two spots to No. 14 in the most recent ITA national team rankings, is a meeting with defending national champion and seventh-ranked Vanderbilt, Thursday in Nashville. The match begins at 4 p.m. at the Currey Tennis Center, and it will be the first-ever women’s collegiate tennis match to be broadcast on the SEC Network +, available through WatchESPN and the ESPN app.
