Texas A&M’s Garrett named unanimous All-American
Texas A&M football standout Myles Garrett became the school’s ninth player to be named unanimous first-team All-American, according to the NCAA.
Garrett, a junior from Arlington, Texas, joins former Texas A&M greats John Kimbrough, John David Crow, Ed Simonini, Robert Jackson, Marcus Buckley, Dat Nguyen, Luke Joeckel and Jake Matthews as unanimous All-Americans, as selected by American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, The Sporting News and Walter Camp Foundation.
Garrett, also a first-team All-SEC pick and a finalist for the Bednarik and Rotary Lombardi Awards, led the Aggies with 8.5 quarterback sacks and 15.0 tackles for loss and also contributed two forced fumbles and 10 QB hurries. Garrett goes into the bowl game as the nation’s active leader in QB sacks with 32.5, and he needs just one sack to move into the Texas A&M and SEC top five for career QB sacks after just 35 games.
2016 Consensus All-America Team
The following players were listed on the most first team All-America teams competing against players at that position only. To be selected a player must be named first team on at least two of the five selected All-America teams. Second teams were used to break ties. Fourteen players were unanimous choices by the five organizations used in the consensus chart — American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, The Sporting News and Walter Camp Foundation. Note: Each of the five teams has a different way of listing the returner or all-purpose player. For the purpose of the Consensus All-America team those categories were treated as one position.
