BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Texas A&M sophomore guard Chennedy Carter was named SEC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday, after earning Tournament MVP honors at the Maui Jim Maui Classic. Carter averaged 26.5 points and led the Aggies to wins over UC Riverside and No. 8 Oregon State.
Against UC Riverside, Carter scored a then-tournament record 26 points, including eight in a 16-second span in the third quarter, quelling the Highlanders’ upset bid and extending Texas A&M’s lead from two to 10 points, as the Aggies would go on to win, 70-63.
Against No. 8 Oregon State, Carter scored 19 points in the game’s first 12 minutes, helping A&M build a lead of as many as 16 points as the Aggies defeated a Top 10 team away from Reed Arena for the first time since 2013 with a 76-70 win. Forced to change positions to shooting guard for the second game, Carter had a tournament-record and season-high 27 points, despite playing most of the second half with a nagging foot injury.
During the Oregon State game, the 45th of her career, she became the quickest SEC player since Georgia’s Janet Harris in 1985 to reach 1,000 career points, and the quickest player to reach that plateau in Texas A&M history. The only active sophomore with 1,000 career points, Carter is now the SEC’s leading scorer on the season with 20.8 points per game, and Division I’s active career leader with 22.3 points per game in her career.
This is Carter’s first career SEC Player of the Week honor, after earning four Freshman of the Week nods in 2017-18.
Carter and the Aggies return to action on Wednesday, December 19 to host Southern California in Reed Arena at 5 p.m. Tickets are available at 12thMan.com/tickets.
