News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
BIRMINGHAM – The No. 2 Texas A&M women’s tennis team swept the weekly conference awards with Mary Stoiana and Lexington Reed earning acclaim Wednesday.
Rewarded for their efforts in the Aggies’ 6-1 victory over No. 16 Pepperdine, Stoiana was tabbed SEC Player of the Week while Reed secured SEC Freshman of the Week. It was the first league honor of the season for both players and the 14th career SEC recognition for Stoiana.
Less than a week after marshaling Texas A&M to its first ever ITA National Team Indoor Championships final, Stoiana was spectacular in both her matches Sunday. In doubles, the unranked duo of Stoiana/Lucciana Perez claimed their first top 10 and third ranked victory of the year, besting No. 7 Savannah Broadus/Vivian Yang, 6-4. After falling behind against No. 16 Broadus in singles play, 5-2, Stoiana won 11 games in row to register a 7-5, 6-0 victory. It was her team-high 11th ranked win of the season.
Reed played some of her best tennis of the year against the Waves. In doubles, she teamed with Nicole Khirin to top Sebastiann Scilipoti/Duru Söke, 7-5, in the point-deciding doubles match. Reed carried the momentum into singles action where she dominated No. 108 Söke on court 6, 6-2, 6-2, for her first career ranked victory and her 15th win of the season.
The Aggies are 9-1 and open SEC play Sunday with an 11 a.m. match in Austin against the No. 8 Texas Longhorns.
