Texas A&M Women’s Tennis Secures Two Spots in NCAA Round of 16

STILLWATER – Texas A&M’s No. 4 seeded doubles team consisting of Mary Stoiana and Mia Kupres advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, while No. 1 seeded Stoiana also reached the round of 16 in the singles bracket Tuesday at the Greenwood Tennis Center.

Stoiana continued her run of dominant singles performances in the second round, claiming her 15th-straight singles victory over NC State’s No. 62 Anna Zyryanova in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).

Kupres/Stoiana opened their doubles campaign at the national event against Syracuse’s No. 35 Miyuka Kimoto/Viktoryia Kanapatskaya. The Orange jumped out to an early lead after taking the first set 6-4, but the Aggies rallied back to dominate the second set, 6-1. The duo carried that momentum into the decider, closing out the match 10-4 in a super-tiebreaker set to advance to the round of 16.

Kupres’ singles campaign came to an end, as she fell to Stanford’s No. 7 seeded Connie Ma in the second round. The sophomore finished her season with a 23-9 singles record.

Stoiana will face Virginia’s No. 67 Annabelle Xu in the round of 16 with first serve set for 12:30 p.m. Following her match, Stoiana will pair with Kupres to square off against South Carolina’s No. 28 Sarah Hamner/Ayana Akli at 4:30 p.m.
