Texas A&M Women’s Golfers Wrap up Day One at Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Texas A&M’s Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio, Jennie Park and Hailee Cooper wrapped up the first round of the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur on Wednesday at the Champions Retreat Golf Club.

Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio led the trio of Aggies with a 2-under 70 which boosted her into a tie for 12th. The freshman started the day on No. 10 and went 2-over on the back nine. However, the No. 7 ranked amateur in the world turned in four birdies on the front, including birdies on three of the last four holes to get into the clubhouse.

Jennie Park went even-par and tied for 29th. The senior was able to secure the even round with birdies on Nos. 2, 6 and 10 and eagled No. 3. Hailee Cooper went 3-over and tied for 57th after day one.

The second round will take place at Champions Retreat and then the top 30 golfers, including ties, will advance to the final round at Augusta National on Saturday. In the event of a tie after 54 holes, the winner will be decided by sudden-death playoff.

The tournament will be broadcast from 12:30-2:30 p.m. on the Golf Channel on Thursday. The final round will be on NBC from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Additionally, live stats for the event can be found at anwagolf.com.

The Augusta National Women’s Amateur was announced on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, by Chairman Fred Ridley during his annual press conference at the Masters Tournament. The event was established to inspire greater interest and participation in the women’s game by creating a new, exciting and rewarding pathway for these players to fulfill their dreams.

Provided she remain an amateur, the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur Champion will receive an invitation to the next five Augusta National Women’s Amateurs, the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open, the 2024 Women’s Open, the 2024 Chevron Championship, the 2024 Evian Championship and any USGA, R&A and PGA of America amateur championships for which she is eligible for one year.
