News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
BELLEAIR, Fla. – The No. 16 Texas A&M women’s golf team was led by Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio who was in sole possession of first place after shooting a 4-under 66 on Friday in the first round of the 2024 SEC Championships at the par-70 Pelican Golf Club.
“It was good day out there,” head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. “We had a solid start to the tournament, and we hope to be here for a while. I didn’t think this place was playing easy and looking at the scores you can tell. Overall, it was a great team effort and Cata had a big day. Everybody did their part, and I can’t wait to get out there tomorrow.”
As a team, the Aggies were tied for second at 1-under 279 with Auburn and were four shots behind South Carolina (-5) for the lead. Mississippi State (E) and Arkansas (+2) rounded out the top five. The Maroon & White will need to stay within the top eight of the team standings to advance to the match-play portion of the tournament by the end of the third round on Sunday. The current cut line stands at 6-over 286
Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio was one stroke ahead of second, which was shared by four different golfers, for the individual lead. The No. 7 amateur in the world knocked down a team-high seven birdies, including three on the final six holes of the day.
