News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
Texas A&M Women’s Golf Finishes Third in Arizona
GOLD CANYON, Ariz. – The Texas A&M women’s golf team finished in third behind Kynadie Adams’ 2-under 70 round that gave her runner-up honors at the Match in the Desert at the Superstition Mountain Golf Course Monday.
“We finished really strong today,” head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. “We saw some great things on the back nine, but on the front, we just didn’t adjust quick enough. Kynadie has been putting in a lot of work. Glad that today happened for her so she can have some confidence moving forward in the work she is putting in. It couldn’t have happened to a better person. I am proud of our group for playing well out in the desert today.”
Adams had a career-best performance, tying for second out in the desert. The junior transfer birdied four of her final six holes, including a four on the par-5 No. 18 to get into the clubhouse one stroke behind the lead. The leaderboard would go unchanged as the rest of the teams completed the 18, securing the top two finish for Adams.
The team finished the one round event with a 7-over 295 after starting the day +11 on the front nine. However, the Aggies picked up five counting strokes on the back nine’s two par-5s (No. 13, No. 18) to vault into the top three to finish the day.
Vanessa Borovilos tied for eighth and was the lone golfer for the Maroon & White to shoot even par or better on the front nine. The freshman’s birdie on 18 gave her a 1-over 73 for the round. Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio and Sky Sudberry both tied for 20th at 4-over 76 to wrap up the counting scores for the Aggies.
Lauren Nguyen tied for 37th and Mia Nixon secured a share of 42nd as an individual.
Kansas took home the team title at 2-over 290 and Lily Hirst of the Jayhawks won the individual crown with a 3-under 69.
Texas A&M returns to team action Feb. 16-18 at the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Florida, to officially tee off for the spring season.
