Texas A&M Volleyball Falls in Sweet 16

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Texas A&M volleyball team concluded its 2024 season as it fell to No. 2 seed Wisconsin in a five-set thriller Friday evening in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in the Bob Devaney Sports Center, 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-13).

The Maroon & White’s (21-8) campaign came to a close in front of packed-out sea of Red in Lincoln, as a fifth-set comeback ran two-points shy in head coach Jamie Morrison’s second year at the helm of the program.

A&M’s return to the Sweet 16 showcased the teams’ versatility on both sides of the net, as they logged more kills and blocks than Wisconsin (26-6), as the efforts were led by Logan Lednicky offensively with a match-high 23 kills, while Ifenna Cos-Okpalla also led both teams with 10 blocks.

The Aggies came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, as they forced an early Badger timeout (5-2). Wisconsin battled back, as both teams began trading points finding themselves tied on five occasions at the midway point (15-15). The Badgers forged some separation, as coach Morrison called his first timeout of the match (20-18). Wisconsin held its momentum and took the opener, 25-21.

Flipping the rhythm in the second, A&M raced out to a five-point advantage prompting the Badgers to burn an early break (7-2). Building on their gap, the Maroon & White tacked on another as Wisconsin called its final timeout of the set (11-5). The onslaught continued, as the Aggies held their lead through the mid-way mark of the set, 15-9. The Badgers dug their heels in, but A&M kept finding answers as they claimed the frame (25-18) to knot the match at one set all.

Opening the third, each team had runs of their own as both programs called timeouts and were knotted at eight. A&M went on another streak, however the Badgers answered back as coach Morrison gathered his squad down one (18-17). Wisconsin pushed on out of the break, recapturing the lead in the match (25-19), 2-1.

Needing to answer the call in the fourth, the Maroon & White came out swinging as they pushed out to a four-point advantage early (10-6). The Badgers continued to battle, lowering the gap by one at the media timeout, 15-12. Back-and-forth play ensued, with Wisconsin inching closer to the lead (21-19), however stepping up was all-region and all-conference standout opposite hitter Lednicky, as she hit four-consecutive kills for the Maroon & White to ensure the frame (25-23) and tied the match, 2-2.

In a winner-take-all final set, it was the Badgers who pulled away following the media timeout (11-6). With no sign of panic, the Aggies mounted a comeback with a 6-2 run behind flawless offense. The team scored on six-straight kills, shrinking the gap to one forcing the Badgers to huddle up (13-12). Wisconsin scored out of the break, before A&M defended a match point grabbing one back, however the effort came up just short with the Badgers stealing the set (15-13) and match, 3-2.
