Texas A&M Track & Field Travels to Split Meets This Weekend

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M Track & Field team splits travel this weekend and heads to the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston and the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque Jan. 31-Feb. 1.  

The Aggies hit the road after a dominant effort at home last time out at the Ted Nelson Invitational, recording three new school records, ten event wins, seven all-time marks and 28 personal bests. 

The first record broken on the day belonged to Debora Cherono in the women’s mile. She logged a time of 4:40.94 that moved her into first place all-time and secured her first collegiate victory. Senior Cooper Cawthra followed suit in the very next race, as he crossed the line at 3:58.19 in the men’s mile to surpass his own mark in the No. 1 spot and further cement his status at the top of the history books. In the 60m hurdles, Jaiya Covington recorded a time of 8:01 to etch her name into the top spot all-time.  

A&M added seven other event winners Saturday. Starting on the track, Auhmad Robinson crossed the line in 20.57 in the 200m to take the event and move into third place on the all-time list. In the 800m, Kimar Farquharson ran a time of 1:48.73 to also finish first.

The 3,000m featured a winner on both sides, as Jack Johnston won the men’s invitational event with a time of 8:15.05, and Kristen McHugh won the women’s 3,000m open with a mark of 10:15.51. 

The final two victories of the Invitational on the oval were earned by the men’s relay teams, with the DMR, consisting of Cawthra, Blake Harris, Luca Santorum and Diego Heredia, recording a time of 9:47.22 and the 4x400m, comprised of Cutler Zamzow, Hossam Hatib, Robinson and Farquharson, logging a time of 3:06.15.  

Moving to the field, Heather Abadie snagged her first win of the season in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.23m/13-10.5. Gavin Champ earned his second triple jump victory of the season with a leap of 15.74m/51-7.75.
