Texas A&M Tennis Secures Two Spots in Women’s NCAA Quarterfinals

STILLWATER – Texas A&M punched a pair of tickets to the NCAA Quarterfinals, as the No. 4 seeded doubles team of Mary Stoiana and Mia Kupres reached the final eight, while No. 1 seeded Stoiana followed suit in the singles bracket Wednesday at the Greenwood Tennis Center.

Stoiana continued her dominant run in the NCAA Tournament singles bracket, defeating her third-consecutive opponent in straight sets. The junior cruised through today’s matchup versus Virginia’s No. 67 Annabelle Xu in the round of 16, downing the Cavalier 6-2, 6-2.

Stoiana/Kupres faced South Carolina’s No. 28 Sarah Hamner/Ayana Akli in round two of the doubles tournament. After dropping the first set, 6-4, the Aggies bounced back with a stellar performance to claim the second, 6-1. The pair closed the Gamecocks out in the decider, outlasting them 10-8 in the super-tiebreaker to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

Stoiana will face UC Santa Barbara’s No. 51 Amelia Honer in the singles quarterfinals with first serve set for 10 a.m. She will then follow up with Kupres to battle Tennessee’s No. 11 Sofia Cabezas/Elza Tomase in the double’s quarterfinals at 3:00 p.m.
