Texas A&M Softball Falls Short at Austin Super Regional

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

AUSTIN – The 16-seeded Texas A&M softball team put three runs on the board in the top of the seventh to get within one, but eventually fell 6-5 to top-seeded Texas in game three of the Super Regional at McCombs Field Sunday night.

Texas A&M (44-15) struck first in the opening frame after Trinity Cannon doubled to right center to score Koko Wooley from first base. The Longhorns’ (52-8) first threat came in the second after a leadoff hit-by-batter, followed by Kramer Eschete throwing out the runner out at third after a double off the left field wall and a ground out as the Aggies ended the frame unscathed.

Texas took its first lead with a double, an error and a wild pitch to tie the game before another RBI double as the Aggies trailed, 2-1, after three innings. The Longhorns made it 3-1 with a solo home run, before the Aggies escaped a bases-loaded jam to remain within striking distance though five innings.

Ol’ Sarge’s charges chipped away at the deficit after a single, an error and Jazmine Hill legging out a fielder’s choice to score pinch runner Hailey Golden. The Aggies loaded the bases with one out, before the golden opportunity was spoiled with back-to-back swinging strikeouts, to trail 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

The Longhorns tacked on three runs in their half of the sixth to go up 6-2, but the Aggies didn’t back down. In the top of the seventh a Wooley single and Cannon walk set up a three-run homer for Julia Cottrill, who sent the ball sailing over the left field wall to get the Maroon & White back within one. With two outs, Texas A&M left two runners on as its late surge fell short.

Shaylee Ackerman was saddled with the loss tossing 4.2 innings and striking out two batters, while yielding three runs and six hits.
