BEAUMONT – The No. 25 Texas A&M soccer team lifted the lid on the 2024 campaign with a 5-0 victory over the Lamar Cardinals Thursday evening.
Braces by Sydney Becerra and Grace Ivey led the assault. Becerra ended the match with five points on her two goals and an assist. Kat Campbell added her first career goal. Taylor Jernigan logged two assists while Kennedy Clark, Taylor Pounds and Carolyn Calzada each added one.
The Aggies pounced on the Cardinals for two goals in the first 15 minutes and tacked on one more in the 35th minute to take a 3-0 lead into the intermission.
Texas A&M was able to silence a raucous crowd as a record 994 fans poured into Lamar Soccer Complex.
The Aggies were relentless in the attack and owned advantages in shots (25-6), shots-on-goal (11-3) and corner kicks (6-0).
Freshman goalkeeper Maysen Veronda earned the shutout in her first career match, logging three saves.
Texas A&M improved to 24-7-1 all-time in season opening matches and 25-0-0 all-time against the Southland Conference.

15’ Carolyn Calzada controlled the ball near the center stripe and sent a pass to Sydney Becerra who worked the ball to a favorable shooting spot where she ripped a right-footer from 22 yards to the right upper 90. A&M 2, LU 0
36’ – Taylor Jernigan sent a diagonal pass to Becerra who need just two touches before driving a right-footer from 20 yards inside the right post. A&M 3, LU 0
57’ – Becerra dumped a ball into the penalty box from 40 yards out. With her back to goal, Ivey fought off a defender, spun and drove a left-footer from 15 yards into the lower left corner. A&M 4, LU 0
80’ – Jernigan worked the ball to the touchline and sent a pass to Kennedy Clark. Clark’s one-touch offering went to Kat Campbell who sent a 20-yard left-footer into the bottom right corner. A&M 5, LU 0
