Texas A&M Soccer Defeats LSU to Advance to SEC Tournament Championship

ORANGE BEACH, Alabama – The Texas A&M defense stymied the LSU offense and Emily Bates registered a golazo in the 74th minute as the Aggies toppled the Tigers, 1-0, Friday night to advance to their third consecutive SEC Tournament championship match.

The victory sends Texas A&M (15-5-1) to Sunday’s title match against Florida. First touch is slated for 1:05 pm Central at Orange Beach Sportsplex and will air on ESPNU.

Texas A&M’s backline received help up-and-down the pitch to make LSU’s offense impotent, allowing just two shots-on-goal for the match. The Tigers’ offensive dynamo, Jorian Baucom, was held to just one shot for the contest and her offering didn’t threaten to put LSU (13-5-4) on the board.

The Aggies held wide advantages across the board, including 23-9 in shots, 7-2 in shots-on-goal and 7-4 in corner kicks.

The Maroon and White broke the scoring seal in the 74th minute with the assault set up by the shifty Mikaela Harvey. The sophomore bobbed and weaved through the Tigers’ midfield and poked a pass through the defense to Bates, making a run into the penalty box on the left side. Bates needed just one touch before launching a missile from 15 yards, sending her shot between the left post and a diving LSU keeper Catalina Rubiano for her seventh goal of the season and the second of the tournament.

After Bates’ goal, the Aggie offense continued to be the aggressor, unleashing five shots inside of 15 yards in the final 12 minutes. Rubiano had to make a pair of point-blank saves to keep A&M from adding insurance goals, first on a shot byHaley Pounds in the 84th minute and 49 seconds later on a shot by Ally Watt.

The Aggies and Tigers went into the intermission tied 0-0, despite Texas A&M’s staunch offensive advantage, including 12-4 in shots, 3-0 in shots-on-goal and 4-0 in corner kicks.

Danielle Rice made two saves in goal for the Aggies to record her second consecutive shutout. It marked the fifth consecutive shutout for Texas A&M in SEC Tournament action, extending their tournament scoreless string to 512 minutes.

The Aggies extended their SEC Tournament win streak to eight matches, the second longest string in tournament history, trailing just a 20-game win streak by Florida in the late 1990s.

The Maroon and White hit the 15-win plateau for the 12th consecutive season, extending the nation’s lengthiest active string of 15-win seasons.

TEXAS A&M QUOTES

Head coach G Guerrieri
On advancing to the championship…
I’m really proud of this team. They’re a young group, but that continues to learn and grow and on Sunday they have a chance to do something special. We stayed patient and Phil (Stephenson) made some adjustments at halftime. We knew we could win the battle in the midfield and build up an attack from there. LSU is a good defense and put up a wall that was hard to penetrate, but we kept chipping away.

On the defense…
Once again they proved up to the challenge. That’s the second straight match the shut down one of the league’s top offensive players, but they’ll have another challenge on Sunday because everybody in the country knows what Savannah Jordan can do. I’m proud of the group back there. Margaret Schmidt stepped up when Mac (McKayla Paulson) went down in the first half and was solid. Ashlynn Harryman controlled the middle of the penalty box. Karlie (Mueller) was doing an outstanding job of flipping the field and getting us on the attack.  And Kendall (Ritchie) continues to be outstanding every time we call on her.

Sophomore midfielder Mikaela Harvey
On the win…
“We knew LSU was a good team and has a great defense. I knew it was going to be a tough battle from the beginning. I’m excited we got the win, because it was a hard-fought victory and we earned it.”

On finally getting on the scoreboard after some early misses…
“It was frustrating because we knew that we had a lot of chances, but it wasn’t falling for us. Everyone on this team fights until the end and we didn’t think their defense could stand up to another 45 minutes of us being aggressive on the offensive end.”

Freshman midfielder Emily Bates
On her goal…
“I saw Miki (Mikaela Harvey) turn and start dribbling. I just tried to find a gap that should could play it through. Before I knew it the ball was there and perfectly placed. I hit it one time and tried to put it somewhere the keeper couldn’t get it.”
