Texas A&M Provost Tells Faculty Senate About Proposed Change In Selecting Academic Administrators

At the next Texas A&M system board of regents meeting, there may be action to change how much influence faculty members have on selecting department heads, deans, and other academic leaders.

A&M provost Carol Fierke discussed the proposal at this week’s faculty senate meeting.

Currently, faculty votes are binding whether to recommend candidates to the search committee. Dr. Fierke says the regents proposal would make the faculty votes advisory or recommendations.

Fierke says the proposal is in part due to the faculty recently eliminating three of five candidates from the search for the next dean of college of agriculture.

Fierke also said the regents are supposed to vote on naming the next ag school dean when they meet February 7-9 in College Station.
