September’s meeting of the Texas A&M faculty senate included a presentation from president Michael Young.
Topics included how A&M will spend $27.5 million dollars each of the next two years in what state lawmakers called “equity funding”. The appropriation followed the University of Texas receiving the same amount during the 2017 session.
$10 million will be spent on the targeted hiring of as many as one hundred new faculty members. Young said that may be leveraged with additional money to hire more faculty.
Three areas will get $5 million each…A&M’s student success initiative, enhancing graduate programs, and developing key focus areas including data science, technology commercialization, and nutrition.
The remaining $2.5 million will be spent on innovative academic programs and research.
