MIDLAND, Texas – Several members of the Texas A&M men’s tennis team, competing as individuals, shined in the Midland Collegiate Invitational last weekend.
Junior Togan Tokac romped through the singles draw with four straight-sets victories, culminating with a 6-1, 6-0 demolition of Texas’ Lucas Brown in the final. Along the way, Tokac, from Istanbul, Turkey, beat Idriss Haddouch of Boise State, 6-3, 6-4; Benedikt Emesz of Arkansas, 6-1, 6-2; Bruno Nhavene of Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-4; and future teammate Tomas Pinho, 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals. Pinho played at UTSA the past two seasons and will join the Aggies in January.
Tokac teamed with senior Luke Casper, from Santa Cruz, California, to win the doubles crown as the pair tallied a hard-fought 9-8 win (10-8 in the tiebreaker) over Hank Trondson and Asahi Harazaki of Oklahoma. Along the way, Tokac and Casper posted wins over Ian Bracks/Thomas Gadecki of Oklahoma State, 8-6; Julien Penzlin/Brock Anderson of LSU, 8-1; and Marino Jakic/Bozo Barun of Arkansas, 8-5.
In addition to Tokac, Casper and sophomore Grant Lothringer both won a pair of singles matches before falling in the quarterfinals. Casper beat Jett Middleton of Boise State and Harazaki before losing to Derek Pham of Oklahoma State, while Lothringer bested Gadecki and Jakic before succumbing to Brown.
In doubles, Lothringer teamed with Pinho for a pair of wins over Calvin Wang/Rahul Sachdev of Texas and Emesz/Connor Smillie of Arkansas before dropping a narrow 9-8 decision to Trondson/Harazaki in the semifinals, 9-8 (7-5).
