Texas A&M Men Finish Sixth at OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational

Olympia Fields, Ill. – The Aggie men’s golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the fall semester Sunday, finishing in a tie for sixth at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational.

“Today was kind of a mixed bag,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “We got off to a great start and I thought we had a chance to do something special and go really low but when we hit the turn we had some big numbers. That really took the wind out of our sails.”

Texas A&M (289-287-288=864) finished the tournament on Olympia Fields Country Club with a team score of 24-over par. Florida State (273-294-279=846, +6), meanwhile, took top team honors, while Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Stanford and Illinois rounded out the top five squads on the 15-team leaderboard.

“All things considered it wasn’t a bad showing for our first tournament of the year, especially since most of the teams here had already played,” Higgins added. “This was a great field on a great course so to finish in the top half of the standings is a pretty good start. It was a nice learning experience and showed us some things we need to work on to get better.”

Individually, senior Andrew Lister (70-76-70=216, +6) notched a top-20 showing, sharing 20th place on the leaderboard after carding his second round of even par at the event on Sunday.

Sophomore Cameron Champ (73-71-73=217, +7) was a shot back in 22ndplace, while senior Adria Arnaus (72-71-75=218, +8) and Chandler Phillips (74-73-71=218, +8) shared 27th.

Senior Ben Crancer (75-72-74=221, +11) placed in a tie for 38th, while freshman Max Miller (73-78-74=225, +15) competed as an individual and finished tied for 59th.

“Overall, it was a pretty good team effort with everybody contributing,” Higgins said. “I think when one of these guys steps forward as a leader and starts contending for some medalist honors we’ll have a chance to be a really strong team. We’re going to work on developing that, but overall I’m pretty happy with our first showing and looking forward to the next one.”

The Aggies are back in action Sept 26-28 when they travel to Valentine, Neb., to participate in the Jackrabbit hosted by South Dakota State.
