Texas A&M Denies Sending Big 12 “Dear John” Letter

A Texas A&M spokesman disputed a New York Times report Tuesday that said the Aggies have officially parted ways with the Big 12 Conference.

Jason Cook, A&M vice president for marketing and communications, tweeted Tuesday, “Contrary to media reports this morning, Texas A&M did NOT send a withdrawal letter to the Big 12 on Monday.”

It was the first official word from the university since the New York Times filed its initial report Monday night.

A&M last week notified the Big 12 it would explore other conference options and sought from Commissioner Dan Beebe the official terms of separation, should the university decide to leave. The university’s clarification means the relationship between A&M and the Big 12 remains the same for now.

Aggie fans mince few words in their desire to join the Southeastern Conference. The university, however, has taken a measured approach to its affiliation with the Big 12, as well as its desire to join with any other conference.
