BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M Cross Country team hosts the seventh-annual Arturo Barrios Invitational Friday at the Watts Cross Country Course. The men’s 8k race will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the women’s 6k race at 9:15 a.m.
Arturo Barrios is a member of the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame class of 1998. During his time in Aggieland, Barrios set school records in the 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000m, and 10,000m races and was a three-time Southwest Conference Champion. In 1985, he was a silver medalist in the NCAA Championships in the 10,000m with a record time of 28:42.77. After graduating from Texas A&M, Barrios represented Mexico in the 1988 Olympic Games setting world records at distances of 10,000m, 20,000m and one-hour run.
The Aggies faced elite competition at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational last time out, with 16 of the 25 men’s teams and 13 of the 24 women’s teams competing at the 2023 national championship meet. Megan Roberts was the Maroon & White’s top point scorer with a 6k time of 21:24.5 that put her in 96th place and led the women to a 24th-place finish. Zack Munger paced the men with an 8k time of 24:35.9 to place 88th and lead the men to a 23rd-place finish.
At last year’s Arturo Barrios Invitational, the Aggies claimed a pair of top-ten finishes. The men placed fourth with a total of 192 points, while the women placed seventh with a total of 231 points.
40 teams and over 800 athletes will complete alongside the Maroon & White at the meet on Friday, including Abilene Christian, Arizona State, Arkansas State, Baylor, Boise State, Central Arkansas, Charleston Southern, Colorado (women), Delaware (women), Eastern Michigan, Georgia Tech, Gonzaga, Houston, Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Louisiana, McNeese State, Mercer, Middle Tennessee State, New Mexico State, New Orleans, Nicholls State, North Dakota, North Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, Rice, Sam Houston, SMU (women), Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M-Texarkana, Tarleton State, TCU, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas State, Texas Tech, UT-Arlington, UTSA and Youngstown State.
