Texas A&M Baseball Ready for Top 10 Battle with Arkansas

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 4 Texas A&M baseball team wraps up its 2024 regular season slate with a three-game set against No. 2 Arkansas starting Thursday night at 7 p.m. from Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.

Thursday’s series opener will be broadcast on ESPN2, while Friday and Saturday’s contest will air on SEC Network. All three contests can be heard locally on SportsRadio 1150AM/93.7 The Zone. Fans can also follow along with the games on X, @AggieBaseball.

The Aggies (42-10, 17-10) and Razorbacks (42-10, 19-8) meet for the 101st time Thursday night. The Maroon & White lead the series 50-49-1 and are 23-22 at home.

Entering the weekend, Texas A&M trails Arkansas by two games in the SEC West standings. A series sweep would secure the Aggies their second SEC West Division title in program history.

For the seventh straight week, Texas A&M is a consensus Top 5 team in the polls. The Maroon & White checked in at No. 4 in the NCBWA and USA Today polls, while D1Baseball and Baseball America ranked them No. 5. Perfect Game placed the Aggies at No. 8 in its latest poll.

Under first year pitching coach Max Weiner, the Aggie pitching staff has lowered its ERA from a season ago by nearly two runs. The Maroon & White rank first in shutouts (9), third in WHIP (1.23), fourth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.28), seventh in ERA (3.96), 10th in hits allowed per nine (7.83), 11th in walks allowed per nine (3.25) and 12th in strikeouts per nine (10.7). Sunday’s shutout of Ole Miss marked the staff’s ninth of the year, which is tied for the third most in program history with the 1977 and 2016 squads.

Offensively, Texas A&M ranks second nationally in walks (339), fourth in homers (116), fourth in homers per game (2.23), fifth in slugging percentage (.580), seventh in runs (475), eighth in on-base percentage (.429), 14th in scoring (9.1) and 18th in hits (548).

The Aggies have arguably the best 1-2-3 lineup punch in all of college baseball in Gavin Grahovac, Jace LaViolette and Braden Montgomery. The trio has combined for 203 of the Aggies 448 RBI on the year.

Entering the weekend, Montgomery ranks fifth nationally in RBI (77), eighth in homers (24), ninth in RBI per game (1.48), 11th in walks (51) and 17th in total bases.

LaViolette currently sits fourth nationally in homers (27), sixth in homers per game (0.52), seventh in total bases (165), seventh in runs (73), 10th in runs per game (1.40), 10th in slugging percentage (.825) and 16th in RBI (69). Against Alabama on April 20, LaViolette became the first player in program history to record back-to-back seasons of 20 or more home runs. LaViolette and Montgomery are also the first pair of teammates in program history to hit 20 or more homers each in a season.

Grahovac has turned in a stellar rookie campaign thus far, ranking seventh in the SEC in RBI with 57. In SEC play, Grahovac has belted 12 homers and driven in 30 RBI.
