Texas A&M Baseball Drops Road Series at LSU

BATON ROUGE – The No. 1 Texas A&M baseball team avoided the sweep Sunday afternoon, defeating LSU, 14-4, from Alex Box Stadium.

The win marked No. 40 for the Aggies (40-8, 16-8), marking the 26th time in program history they have accomplished the feat.

Chris Cortez earned the win in relief after tossing 4.1 scoreless frames to go along with six strikeouts. The victory improved the junior’s season record to 7-2.

Freshman Gavin Grahovac paced the offensive attack for the Maroon & White, finishing 3-for-6 with four RBI. The three-hit game marked the rookie’s seventh of the year. Blake Binderup (2-for-4) and Jackson Appel (2-for-6) rounded out the multi-hit performers for the Aggies on the afternoon.

After the Tigers (31-18. 9-15) jumped out to a 3-0 advantage through three, the Maroon & White hung a nine-spot in the fifth to jump in front. In the frame, which took over 40 minutes, Texas A&M registered nine hits and drew three walks. Appel and Grahovac registered the big hits of the frame as the duo belted a two-run and three-run homer, respectively. For Grahovac, the long ball marked his 17th of the year, while Appel’s was his ninth of the season.

Travis Chestnut picked up a pair of RBI in the frame, while Blake Binderup also brought home a run on an RBI single. Grahovac plated the final run of the frame with an RBI single to center.

The Aggies tacked on five more runs in the ninth behind a Kaeden Kent grand slam and a Jace LaViolette solo shot. The grand slam marked the first of Kent’s career, while LaViolette’s long ball upped his team-leading total to 25.

LSU got a run back in the bottom half on an RBI single to make the final 14-4 in favor of the Maroon & White.

Texas A&M totaled 13 hits and drew 10 walks in the win.
Three Aggies recorded a multi-hit performance.
Grahovac and Kent plated a game-high tying four RBI apiece.
Caden Sorrell and Chestnut each drew a game-best three walks in the win.
Sorrell also recorded his league-best fifth triple of the year.
As a staff, the Maroon & White punched out 11 Tigers.
Starter Tanner Jones earned a no-decision after allowing three runs in 2.2 innings.
Evan Aschenbeck finished off the final two innings, allowing one run and striking out two.
Kaiden Wilson also made an appearance in relief.

Notes

With the win, the Aggies are now 32-29-1 all-time against LSU.
Grahovac pushed his hitting streak to 15 in the win.
Ali Camarillo has now reached base safely in 34 straight games.
The junior has also now hit safely in 13 consecutive contests.
Hayden Schott extended his on-base streak to 21.
Appel’s multi-hit game marked his 18th of the year.
