Texas A&M Athletics’ Tops in Academics

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Proof of Texas A&M Athletics’ commitment to success in the classroom and graduation was shown in the annual release of Academic Progress Rate (APR) data from the NCAA on Wednesday.

Texas A&M surpassed the required NCAA standard in all sports, and all 19 NCAA-sponsored athletics programs achieved a multi-year rate of 944 or higher (on a 1000 scale) for data submitted for the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years.

“Success in the classroom, as well as the field of competition, is paramount in college athletics,” Texas A&M Director of Athletics Eric Hyman said. “I’m extremely proud of what our student-athletes have been able to accomplish. Our student-athletes work as hard in the classroom as they do in their sport, and the fruits of their labor was borne out in the APR data. We also had 65 student-athletes graduate during May commencement, and I think that speaks volumes about what we are trying to accomplish here at Texas A&M.”

Leading the way for the Aggies was head coach Laurie Corbelli’s volleyball team, which received a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for earning multi-year Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of all Division I volleyball programs. The Aggies had a perfect score of 1,000 based on 51 student-athletes during the four-year span. During that time frame, the Aggies advanced to three NCAA Volleyball Championship tournaments and won the 2012 Southeastern Conference Western Division Championship.

Other superlatives from the APR data were all-time high multi-year rates from two Texas A&M programs – football and women’s swimming and diving. The Texas A&M football team, which earned three wins in four bowl trips in the time frame, achieved a score of 974. The swimming and diving squad totaled a near-perfect score of 997 while winning a conference team title and finishing in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships each year.

In addition, eight Texas A&M varsity athletics programs registered a perfect 1000 APR score for the 2013-14 academic year — women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s golf, softball, soccer, women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis and volleyball.

Also of note was the continued upward trend of APR scores earned by the men’s basketball team, which posted scores of 980 and 977 in 2012-13 and 2013-14, respectively.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete during the school year. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance.
