News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
INDIANAPOLIS – Texas A&M Athletics achieved its record multi-year Academic Progress Rating (APR) with a 987 average during the 2019-20 to 2022-23 academic years, the NCAA announced.
Highlighting the record-setting APR for the department were four teams – men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s golf and volleyball – that registered perfect 1,000 APR averages. Additionally, a total of 11 programs posted ratings of 990 or higher.
“Our athletic teams and the Center for Student-Athlete Services deserve recognition for the tremendous work they have put into achieving the most recent academic progress rating,” Dr. Dan Childs, Executive Associate Athletics Director – Academics and Student-Athlete Engagement, said. “Over four years, the APR reveals how well each program retains and graduates its student-athletes. With four teams achieving perfect multi-year scores and 11 scoring 990 or higher, this is an extraordinary achievement for the university and athletics department. As an athletics department, we are committed to supporting our student-athletes’ academic and athletic success through championship athletics.”
In addition to the teams with perfect scores, programs achieving APR results of 990 or higher were equestrian, men’s tennis, soccer, softball, women’s swimming & diving, women’s tennis and women’s track & field.
The Academic Progress Rate measures the eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. It also serves as a predictor of graduation success. The NCAA’s Division I Board of Directors set cut scores of 930 (out of 1,000) as a threshold for teams to meet or face possible immediate and historical sanctions. An APR of 930 translates to approximately a 50-percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR).
