College Station City Council Members Have Mixed Reactions To Participating In The Salvation Army’s Capital Campaign

A majority of College Station city council members tentatively supports contributing something towards the Salvation Army’s $9.1 million dollar capital campaign. How much, was not reached during a budget workshop discussion on July 16th. College Station council members were told that the Salvation Army was seeking $500,000 dollars apiece from the cities of College Station and Bryan and from Brazos County. At the time of the College Station council discussion, the request had not been brought up by the Bryan council or the county commission. Supporters of matching what Bryan and the county does were Mark Smith, Dennis Maloney, and Linda Harvell. Mayor John Nichols was willing to consider less than $500,000 dollars. He was also interested in what the Bryan council and county commission does. William Wright supported a contribution, but he did not indicate how much. Elizabeth Cunha wanted more information before making a decision. And Bob Yancy told the mayor he was opposed to a city contribution. Brazos County Commission Awards Construction Contract For Drainage Improvements Between The Tax Office And Extension Office

Brazos County commissioners award a $704,000 dollar contract designed to improve drainage between the extension office and the tax office. The county’s purchasing agent, Charles Wendt, tells WTAW News that significant rainfall has also caused problems in the front of the extension office. Wendt says the project includes demolishing sidewalks, concrete paving, and raised planter beds. The slope of the land will be adjusted and underground pipes will be installed before replacing the concrete. A larger canopy will also be installed at the front entrance of the tax office. The project is supposed to take 90 days to complete, weather permitting. Commissioners had no comments prior to their unanimous vote at their July 23rd meeting. Another Multi Story Structure Coming To West Bryan’s Lake Walk Development

Another multi-story building is announced for west Bryan’s Lake Walk development. Officials of William Cole Companies say what will be called The Lumin, which will be built along the waterfront, will be about as tall as the neighboring Stella Hotel. The Lumin will feature five floors of office space along with restaurant and retail space. Founder and president of William Cole Companies Spencer Clements tells WTAW News that construction is expected to start the middle of 2025 and weather permitting will open in the fall of 2026.
