The governor’s news release says many higher education institutions acted quickly to condemn antisemitism.

But the news release also says some unidentified radical organizations on unidentified campuses have engaged in undisclosed acts that he says has no place in Texas.

The governor’s executive order requires that all higher education institutions in Texas review their free speech policies to include the definition of antisemitism and establish and enforce appropriate punishments for antisemitic rhetoric.

A Texas A&M police spokesman tells WTAW News that he has not heard of any antisemitism acts.

At Blinn College, the response to an open records request by WTAW News is that no records exist of any antisemitism acts between August 1, 2023 and March 27, 2024.

As for how both institutions will deal with the governor’s executive order, spokespeople at A&M and Blinn say they are reviewing the order and are developing next steps.

News release from the governor’s office, issued March 27, 2024:

Governor Greg Abbott today issued an Executive Order to fight the increase in acts of antisemitism at colleges and universities in Texas and ensure a safe learning environment for Jewish students and all Texans.

“Antisemitism is never acceptable in Texas, and we will do everything we can to fight it,” said Governor Abbott. “The State of Texas stands with Israel and the Jewish community, and we must escalate our efforts to protect against antisemitism at Texas colleges and universities and across our state. Across the country, acts of antisemitism have grown in number, size, and danger to the Jewish community since Hamas’ deadly attack on October 7th. Texas took immediate action to protect Jewish schools, synagogues, and other key locations. Many Texas colleges and universities also acted quickly to condemn antisemitism, but some radical organizations on our campuses engaged in acts that have no place in Texas. Now, we must work to ensure that our college campuses are safe spaces for members of the Jewish community.”

The Governor’s Executive Order requires that all higher education institutions in Texas review their free speech policies to establish appropriate punishments for antisemitic rhetoric on college and university campuses, ensure that policies that address the sharp rise of antisemitic acts are enforced, and include the definition of antisemitism in free speech policies.

Governor Abbott has taken significant action to bolster security and combat antisemitism across Texas amid acts of war against the State of Israel and innocent civilians by the brutal terrorist organization Hamas, including:

• Distributing over $4 million in grant funding to 31 Jewish organizations that will support security enhancements

• Directing the Texas Department of Public Safety to coordinate with local partners and federal intelligence agencies on heightened public safety measures across the state

• Issuing an Executive Order directing all Texas state agencies to refrain from purchasing goods produced in or exported from the Gaza Strip and from any organization or state actor with ties to Hamas

• Ordering Texas flags lowered to half-staff in honor of lives lost amid act of war in Israel

• Bolstering education resources to increase awareness and understanding of the Israel-Hamas war for Texas students

The Governor has continued to support the Jewish community and combat antisemitism throughout his time in office, including: establishing the Texas Holocaust, Genocide, and Antisemitism Advisory Commission; awarding more than $19 million through his Public Safety Office for security enhancement projects to houses of worship, such as synagogues; and banning all state agencies from engaging in business or investments with companies that boycott Israel.
