TCEQ Warns Junior Water Permit Holders in the Brazos River Basin

Some who have water permits in Brazos and surrounding counties are being warned they might have to again reduce consumption or go without.

Due to the drought, Dow Chemical last November exercised its 70 year old status as a senior water permit holder to continue full consumption. That forced those with junior permits to use less or no water.

Dow lifted their order last week, removing restrictions for the time being.

At this week’s meeting of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), commissioner Carlos Rubinstein of Austin warned junior permit holders to be ready as drought conditions continue.

There were two adjustments to the original order nearly three months ago, leading commissioner Toby Baker of Austin to ask staff to customize future orders recognizing where the drought isn’t as severe.

A Dow representative at the TCEQ meeting did not say if they were planning to exercise that right again.
