COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Head Coach Gary Blair announced Thursday the signing of Northwest Florida State College sophomore forward Tavarsha Scott to a letter-of-intent.
“It is tough when a program has to replace the quality of players like we have to this season,” Blair said. “We went out an recruited for needs this season because we have the luxury of our great freshman guard class coming back next year. Signing two junior college forwards gives us versatility next season.”
Scott’s play led the Raiders of Northwest Florida State College (27-5) to the NJCAA Elite Eight. Playing under the direction of third year head coach Patrick Harrington, Scott led her team in both points and rebounds at 13.9 and 9.4 respectively.
“I think it’s not the size of the dog in the fight but rather it’s the size of the fight in the dog,” Harrington said. “The things that separate Tavarsha, you can’t measure those in pounds and inches. It is the internal stuff that makes her a great player. She’s relentless in the way she plays and pursues the ball. She’s got passion and as long as she keeps battling, she’s one of those players who would find her way on the floor for any team in the country.”
Scott, a native of Ringgold, Louisiana, was honored this season as the NJCAA Region VIII Player of the Week along with NJCAA Division 1 Player of the Week in late February. The energetic forward led the Raiders to a share of the Panhandle Conference regular season title and a No. 1 final ranking in the Florida College System Activities Association. Regularly providing a spark off the bench for Harrington’s Raiders, Scott was named the All-Panhandle Conference team by the league’s coaches.
The sophomore’s stellar play continued into the post-season as she was named a member of the NJCAA Region VIII All-Tournament Team by the FCSAA. Scott finished the season 20th in total rebounds and 21st in field-goal percentage nationally.
“Scott came off the bench to lead her team in scoring for Coach Harrington,” Blair added. “ Watching her in person at the NJCAA National Tournament made me fall in love her style of play. She reminds me of Danielle Gant and Patrice Reado in how hard she plays and how unselfish she is on the court. Tavarsha is an old-school hard-nosed player that comes to us from a very successful program that regularly produces high-level talent.”
The Louisiana native began her collegiate career at Southern University at Shreveport, a two-year campus for the Southern University System, prior to transferring to Northwest Florida State College. In her only season in Shreveport, Scott was named to the Miss-Lou All-Conference Team averaging 18.8 points and 13.1 rebounds per game.
Scott, Achiri Ade of Midland College and Jada Terry of Cedar Hill High School complete the 2013 signing class for Blair and the Aggies.
