Szeryk, Fabrizio Contending for Match Play at Ladies’ British Amateur

PORTSTEWART, Northern Ireland- Texas A&M golfers Maddie Szeryk and Bianca Fabrizio competed in the first qualifying round of the 112th Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship on Tuesday at Portstewart Golf Club. Szeryk shot a two-over 75 and is in qualifying position for match play, while Fabrizio is just two strokes away from match play with a five-over 78.

Elin Esborn of Sweden leads the tournament on the par 72 / 6,262 yard course with a first-round 67 (-6). After two rounds of stroke play, the top 64 competitors will face off in match play to determine a champion. Currently, 76 (+3) would tie for the last qualifying spot for match play.

Szeryk is currently tied for 45th after her opening-round 2-over, and Fabrizio is tied for 92nd. Fabrizio tees off at 7:03 a.m. local/1:03 a.m. CT, while Szeryk tees off at 9:37 a.m. local/3:37 a.m. CT in the second and final qualifying round on Wednesday.

Eight of the top 20 from the Women’s World Amateur Rankings have entered the tournament – Leona Maguire (ranked No 2/Duke), Bronte Law (3/UCLA), Noemi Jimenez (6/Arizona State), Celine Boutier (7/Duke), Madelene Sagstrom (8/LSU), Nuria Hurrios (9), Linnea Strom (19) and Olivia Cowan (20).

Fabrizio and Szeryk helped Texas A&M to the SEC team title in 2015, with Fabrizio winning the individual title and Szeryk finishing as the tournament’s runner-up. Both Fabrizio and Szeryk were First Team All-SEC selections, and Szeryk was the league’s Freshman of the Year.
