Sumlin to be introduced as new coach today

Kevin Sumlin will pull on the maroon jacket today at a formal introduction as A&M’s new Head Football Coach.

The 47-year-old coach needs no introduction to A&M as he spent two seasons here in 2001 and 2002, coaching wide receivers in A&M’s last bowl win, the Gallery Furniture Bowl in Houston. He was promoted to offensive coordinator by RC Slocum in 2002. That team beat then #1 Oklahoma at Kyle Field but finished 6-6 and the Slocum was let go, along with all but one of the coaching staff by new coach Dennis Franchione.

He spent the next five season at Oklahoma under Bob Stoops, before getting the top job at the University of Houston. His teams went 35-17 in four years, and to three bowl games, including coming up Jan. 2 in the Ticket City Bowl against Penn State, where he will not coach. His team was ranked 6th in the BCS Standings at 12-0 before falling to Southern Miss in the C-USA Title game.

Sumlin will be introduced at a gathering at the Bright Football Building today at 11 am and we will carry that live on both 1620 WTAW and 1150 AM and at radioaggieland.com.
