Earlier this year, representatives of several service clubs announced plans to develop the twin cities first playground for children with special needs.

City of College Station communications director Jay Socol says organizers have reached the point where they want to collect public input about the Fun For All area of Central Park.

Planners are looking for suggestions about what playground equipment and activity areas should be included.

The first of two public meetings is Tuesday night at 6:30 at Southwood Commmunity Center.

News release courtesy of the city of College Station:

When the Fun for All Playground at College Station’s Stephen C. Beachy Central Park is finished, it will be the area’s first and only inclusive playground for children with special needs.

But what playground equipment and activity areas make the most sense?

We’re counting on our residents to share their opinions during two public meetings:

Sept. 30, 6:30-8 p.m. | Oct. 28. 6:30-8 p.m.

About the Fun for All Playground:

The Fun for All Playground project is a unique, collaborative endeavor among the Rotary Club of College Station, the College Station Noon Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Texas A&M’s College of Architecture and College Station Parks & Recreation.

A two-acre site within Central Park is represented in the A&M landscape architecture students’ conceptual design, which will be shared and discussed during the public meetings. The playground is intended to have a long life, require little maintenance, but provide a safe atmosphere for all ability levels. Initial discussions included customized slides for kids with limited mobility, sensory items for those with Autism, a splashpad, nature trail, gardens and interactive elements to encourage social play.

Estimated cost of the Fun for All Playground is $2 million, much of which is the focus of fund-raising efforts.
