Stolen Traffic and Street Signs in College Station

In 2018, 141 traffic and street signs went missing in College Station, costing the city $28,000.

Lee Robinson, Traffic Systems Division Manager, says the most popular signs for thieves come from The Barracks neighborhood, west of the Wellborn-Rock Prairie intersection.

Papa Bear was stolen six times, Mama Bear was stolen five times, and tied at four times stolen was Baby Bear, Goldilocks, and Airborne.

“Mainly it is during the first of the semester and towards the end of the semester,” said Robinson.

Robinson says stolen street and traffic signs are not only costly to the city, but dangerous to motorists.

“A stop sign, it is obvious that you’re going to have a collision if someone doesn’t stop at that location,” said Robinson.

Robinson says tamper-proof nuts and bolts are used, but if the thieves want a sign badly enough, they find a way to take it.

Stealing or possessing a stolen street or traffic sign is against the law, and Robinson says you will be prosecuted if you are found with one. But if you voluntarily return a stole sign to the City of College Station, there will be no punishment.
