State Supreme Court & Court of Appeals Headed to B/CS

You have two opportunities this week to see the state courts in action in action on local college campuses.

Wednesday, the Blinn College Bryan campus hosts for the second consecutive year the Waco-based 10th court of appeals. The three member panel will hear arguments in four cases, in the morning at 10 and 11 and in the afternoon at 2 and 3 inside Blinn’s student center.

Thursday, the state supreme court takes up two cases on the A&M campus Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon in Rudder Theater. Free tickets are available at the MSC box office. One case involves an effort to prevent discovery of an anonymous blogger’s identity, and the other takes up a dispute over unclaimed settlement proceeds from a class-action case.

At both A&M and Blinn, justices will take questions from the audience…the supreme court after they hear both cases and the appeals court following their second case before breaking for lunch.

There is one state supreme court case of interest Wednesday in Austin:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ The issues of same-sex marriage and divorce are set to go before the Texas Supreme Court.

The court is scheduled to hear arguments Tuesday on whether Texas can grant divorces to same-sex couples who married elsewhere.

Both cases involve same-sex couples who married legally in Massachusetts. Texas approved a constitutional ban on gay marriage in 2005.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott argues that state law won’t allow Texas to recognize the divorces because that would validate the marriage. The couples
question whether the same-sex marriage ban applies to divorce and whether it conflicts with the U.S. Constitution.

The U.S. Supreme Court in June struck down parts of the federal Defense of Marriage Act because it treats same-sex couples unequally.

The Texas court is not expected to rule for several months.
