Updated to provide more information from Bryan police: Bryan police is investigating a Memorial Day stabbing where the victim died and one person is in custody. The victim was identified as 59 year old Robert Sweeps. BPD arrested 69 year old Nolan Benford of Bryan on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Officers responded Monday just before 3:30 a.m. to an apartment in the 2700 block of Poplar Circle. This is west of Finfeather Road and south of Turkey Creek Road. Officers who located the victim immediately began providing life saving measures, which continued as the victim was taken to the hospital where they died. During the investigation, BPD received information that Benford was inside a neighboring apartment. That resulted in an evacuation of the entire apartment building. Benford was not in the building but he returned to the scene and surrendered. As of Monday afternoon, a BPD news release said investigators did not have a motive for the stabbing. Online jail records show Benford is held as of Monday afternoon in lieu of a $500,000 dollar bond.
